Readers Theater: A Motivating Method to Improve Reading Fluency
Phi Delta Kappan, Vol. 91, No. 5 (February 2010): pp. 85-88 (online only).
By Lara Beth Clementi
Students can improve their reading fluency through repeated reading of the same text, which is usually boring and mundane. However, Readers Theater is an engaging strategy that incorporates repeated reading. Students practice roles within scripts that are at their reading level. The activity culminates in a performance in which even the most reluctant readers are stars. Teachers can use Readers Theater in the content areas, which leads to increased understanding of difficult concepts and vocabulary. When engaged in Readers Theater, students are reading while enjoying themselves and learning important information.(4pp.)
