Why High School Must Go: An Interview with Leon Botstein
Phi Delta Kappan, Vol. 88, No. 09 (May 2007): 659-663. Robert Epstein High school is part of an outmoded, factory-inspired system of education that no longer serves the needs of American youth. Evidence from several fields shows that many or most teens are capable of functioning at a high level in the adult world and that the turmoil we see among our teens is caused by the artificial extension of childhood past puberty. These ideas are explored through an interview with Leon Botstein, president of Bard College, who has long advocated that the American high school should be abolished.
