WASHINGTON COMMENTARY: Our Brothers' Keepers?
Phi Delta Kappan, Vol. 87, No. 07 (March 2006): 483-484.
Anne C. Lewis
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has announced that it will start ranking states and perhaps even counties on the basis of student performance, ‘with the idea that businesses will find this information useful in determining where to locate.’ Meanwhile, federal officials are planning a certification program tied into student aid for the whole country. And if the outline slipped into the budget bill by the Senate becomes law, federal officials may be certifying the rigor of all public high schools in the country. These recent events are examples of how supercilious Big Brotherly snooping that looms over the public schools works against the superficial rhetoric suggesting that national policies are truly concerned about all children.
