English Language Learning and Leadership: Putting It All Together
Phi Delta Kappan, Vol. 91, No. 3 (November 2009): pp. 38-43.
By Anne M. Lundquist and Jane Hill
As the student population becomes increasingly linguistically diverse, educators are faced with the challenge of providing academically rigorous instruction to ELLs. Because this requires teachers to adopt new strategies that challenge learners to think at higher levels; it will subsequently require leaders to intentionally address all aspects of the change process to ensure teachers have the support they need to successfully incorporate the new strategies in their classrooms. This article details one approach for increasing the rigor of instruction for ELLs by incorporating higher-order thinking skills with the stages of language acquisition; and provides guidance to leaders on how to fully support the implementation of this strategy at the school level.
