Superintendents in Classrooms: From Collegial Conversations to Collaborative Action
Phi Delta Kappan, Vol. 87, No. 07 (March 2006): 537-545. Sharon Rallis, Jane Tedder, Andrew Lachman, and Richard Elmore The Connecticut Superintendents' Network has wrestled with establishing high-quality teaching and improving student learning throughout their districts. Committed to a process of direct observation and to supporting each other in problem-solving around what they see in practice, the group meets monthly to focus on a problem related to student learning in a particular school identified by a superintendent. Participants visit classrooms to collect, analyze, and interpret data from practice. This article tells the story of what happens when a group of public school superintendents come together to form a community of practice for improvement of teaching and learning.
