Superintendent in the Classroom
Phi Delta Kappan, Vol. 87, No. 07 (March 2006): 546-551. Gary Schomburg In the spirit of 'Management by Walking Around' and 'Walk-Through Observations', a system was developed to enable the superintendent to be move visible in district school buildings and make some positive impact on instructional practices. A data recording system was developed that focused on specific instructional practices and classroom characteristics. This system results in three to four visits to each classroom each year and the compiled data is shared with building principals. Included in the article are tips for superintendents in making this system work, as well as anecdotes of humorous situations encountered in these visits.
