Beyond Ephebiphobia: Problem Adults or Problem Youths?
Phi Delta Kappan 75, No. 5 (January 1994): 411-413. (Out of print.) Kirk A. Astroth Like previous generations of adults, we seem to be suffering from ephebiphobia--a fear and loathing of adolescence. Today adolescence is seen as some incurable social disease, and we tend to view all young people as at-risk, or out-of-control, or aberrant in some way, despite the fact that by nearly every important measure U.S. teenagers now are healthier, better educated, and more responsible than teens of the past. The author contends that this attitude scatters valuable resources and dilutes efforts to help the minority of youths who are genuinely troubled.(0pp.)
